About Our Rating System:

Make an Educated Decision:

Storage: The amount of physical disk space available for your source code, image, and database files. Most websites will use only a small portion of this space for source code, as these files are typically small. Images are what typically account for most of the space used. Be sure that you are buying enough space for your files by collecting everything into one folder and identifying the size on your local machine (Windows users can right-click on the folder and select "properties" to do this.)

Bandwidth/Transfer: The amount of data transmitted to users by your website. This number is highly dependent on both the amount of traffic you recieve and the size of your files. For example, if you have a one page website that is 10k in size (see Storage) and you receive 100 visitors per month, your bandwidth would be 1000k per month (around one megabyte). Bandwidth is usually expressed in Gigabytes (gb) - one gb is roughly equal to 1000 Megabytes (mb). Though it is difficult to estimate how much bandwidth a new site will need, most beginning hosting plans include enough bandwidth to get started and most offer additional a la carte bandwith plans. Steer clear of any plan that shuts the site down after your monthly bandwidth allotment has been consumed unless your budget is strictly limited and you don't mind the potential downtime.

POP Email Accounts: Most, if not all, basic hosting plans include some number of POP email accounts which you can use for your website. For example, if your website is MyCompany.com, you would be able to create an email address of me@mycompany.com. The number shown in our comparision chart tells you how many such email addresses you can create with each plan.

CGI: In the Web Hosting world, CGI refers to the ability of the web server to support dynamic websites which use certain common programmatic languages. Perl, Python, ColdFusion, and ASP/ASP.NET are the more common types of CGI languages used to develop websites. Almost all web hosts today offer CGI support, but it is important to ensure that the plan you choose offers support for the particular language you are using.

Database Support: Most e-commerce websites today use some kind of database to store dynamic content. Like CGI, almost all web hosts offer database support. If you are using a common DB program such as Access, MySQL, or MSSQL (SQL Server) you will most likely find that your database is supported. Be certain to check before signing up, and make sure that the web host provides you with easy access to your DB.

Front Page: Front page users will want to ensure that the plan they select is advertised as having Front Page Support. This will allow you to use all of the convenient features of Front page, such as the file upload/deploy utility.
